Day 1. A Forgotten World
Although we have only 45 minutes to change flight at Charles
de Gaule airport, the officer takes plenty of time for a thorough
check. Shoes and hats off, emptied backpack and pockets. After
the guy examines our stuff without much interest we're ready
to board: flight AF908 to Antananarivo (Tana), the capital of
Madagascar. In the plane, the navigation system shows that we
just passed Tel Aviv. Another 6000 kilometers to go and we'll
be landing in Tana. Where it will be 10pm and pitch dark.
Once we have landed and finish the formalities we set our first steps on Madagascan soil. Our adventure can begin!
Outside the airport a crowd of guys rushed towards us to offer all kind of services such as porting, driving, touring or money changing. We ask one of them for the price for a ride to our reserved hotel and as his price seems to be reasonable, we decide to hop in. The co-driver gives us a firm handshake and calls us a welcome to Madagascar. During the ride he introduces himself as Rija and it turns out that not only he speaks english but also french, italian and even some words of dutch. While our new friend holds an impressive speech about his country we reach hotel Sakamanga.
Rija wants to make an appointment with us for the next day
and we agree. We pay his taxi and after enjoying a Three Horses
beer we pay a visit to our room. Outside it starts to rain.
